Things to Don In Athens - Greece

Holidays to Greece are not only for relaxation and rest, but also have educational benefits. Time management is the key in exploring everything that Athens has to offer, without missing some impressive landmarks that made Athens what it is today. Prioritizing narrows the list to the most famous and most visited highlights that include both relaxation and active tourist seeking spots.

The Acropolis (Upper City)
Hands down, the most important historical site in the city, the Acropolis is easily accessible. Large avenues have been built on the south and west borders and are lined with cafes and restaurants. The Parthenon was constructed by Pericles in the 5th century BC as a monument to cultural and political achievements. The Parthenon is considered the most perfect building built by the world's most advanced civilization. It continues to remain a mystery as to how this was accomplished.

Attica Zoological Park
With the second largest collection of birds in the world, this impeccably landscaped zoo is privately maintained. The bird section is divided into 2 sections: Smaller birds reside in large room sized cages while large birds live in giant enclosed gardens. Bird species from all parts of the word can be seen in this kingdom. Near the bird section is an educational center displaying butterflies, scorpions and insects. Also see mammals and reptiles.

The National Archaeological Museum
Lauded as one of the top ten rated museums in the world, the National Archaeological Museum boasts some of the richest ancient Greek art collections. Construction began in 1866 but was not completed until 1889 as new portions were added. Some highlights are the prehistoric collection and the Relief of Eleusis

The Athens Coastal Tram Relax and take a ride along the coast. Stop and sample authentic Greek cuisine. See great views of the city and the Aegean Sea. You can even pop over and visit one of the many Greek Islands on the way. The coastal tram takes passengers from Syntagma Square to the beaches with stops along the way. Holidays to Greece will satisfy those looking for history, adventure and rest!

The Temple of Olympian Zeus
Once the largest temple in all of Greece, it once included 104 columns that reached as high as 56 feet tall. Made from Pentellic marble, 15 remain standing today. The arch contains two inscriptions, each on opposite sides. On one side it reads, "This is the ancient Athens, city of Theseus," while on the other, "This is the city of Hadrian, not of Theseus."
